All it took was a brilliant idea

Opportunity

Opportunity

It’s been a long week. Decided to just come home and watch Discovery Travel and Living.

Wasn’t too thrilled @ first looking at burgers and milkshakes until they started talking about how Diners come about… that piqued my interest.

I LOVE RETRO stuff!

Ooh… I didn’t know diners were first started due to the automobile boom, rendering many trains/rail redundant… and people turned it into… dining places! Wow! What entrepreneurship. And recycling. All it took was some ingenuity. Hmm… wonder what opportunities this recession will pose…

Tribute to the Legendary Uncle John

Ahead

Ahead

Deaths are never easy.

And funerals are for the living.

Went for one of my closest friend’s dad’s wake tonight and am feeling emotional. Visited them last week and was still approaching it ‘logically’ until tonight. Couldn’t help but tear. And remember Uncle John’s welcome whenever I stayed over or hung out @ their place. And saw so much of his character in my dear friend – the dependability, the calmness, the unassuming nature and the quiet love.

There are 2 things that I will find hard to forget…

1) Family love

Uncle John LOVES his family…and his family LOVES him. Remember how Uncle John would come pick up Noe from the airport and greets her with a big smile and a big hug. @ the death bed… his whole family was there… to cheer, love, care and do whatever… just to alleviate pain, increase comfort. Some of them will tell jokes, some of them will massage, some of them will feed and all of them would tell him they love him…Truly, he built a home, not a house. A home where even I, a guest, felt belonged and welcomed. His home was also a place where I’ve stayed over often as a place of refuge, fun and love.

2) Tenacity and Joy

From what I know, cancer IS painful. Even with the pain, Uncle John walked through it with a smile and continued trust in God’s goodness. I really admire that about him… even @ the hospital… though weak and in pain, he still smiled and fought on. He was not grouchy, did not throw tantrums but whenever he was awake, he smiles and tries his best to converse… PLUS thanked all who came to visit him. I’ll really miss him.

Sacrifice

Sacrifice

He reminds me of the many firemen who died while rescuing many during 9-11… his love and sacrifice for his family, for his colleagues, community and his church. Unlike some deaths which just comes and goes, I believe Uncle John’s death… will inspire many to look ahead and walk on bravely.

Roses are Orange, White and Pink too

Portraits of Roses

I’ve got a friend’s birthday this month and she LURRRVVVVES roses. Similar to how I like the colours orange and green.

Grabbed some shots of roses I took and blew it up to 6R conveniently @ Kodak @ Far East Plaza and fitted it into an Ikea frame. Lovely.

Realise I love taking photos of roses. Probably because roses are real with a tinge of poignancy – exuding beauty yet with a layer of pain; tender yet with some edginess; blooms glorioiusly yet it fades quickly.

Really happy with this portrait; the rose was from my cousin’s wedding decorations!

Man/Woman

A colleague sent this ad over today (yes, a man) with this caption: ” Man/woman – what you think when someone asks you for a drink “. Heh. Very true and funny.

Yeah, life can seem simpler for a guy but still love beng a woman. The choices and options may be crazy @ times, but it can be super duper fun. Hmm… what shoes shall I wear tomorrow ;) ?

Happy Colour. Not so Happy Experience

Mandarin Toes

Mandarin Toes

A really close old-time pal decided to treat me to a pedicure as part of her package @ Strip, Wheelock place.

Enjoyed the foot massage, treatment and very happy with the happy mandarin colour I picked in anticipation of CNY.

What was unpleasant was the inflexibility of the branch supervisor and the lack of alignment between the branches.

1. My friend had called up earlier to extend her package. Upon payment time, the package was still frozen.

2. When she requested for paying for my pedi via her package, they said that their policy only allowed for family members to ride on the package. The thing is, my friend has treated me to a pedicure @ the Holland Village branch. But the branch supervisor @ Wheelock insisted that the policy had not changed and they did not have earlier records. In the end, my friend had to pay extra out of the package for my pedi. Some form of customer recovery like free nail art for my friend the next time she visits may be a good move, but none of that.

Overall, I felt that the branch supervisor did a good job of asserting her stand, explained well and retained composure. However, I’m surprised @ the lack of flexibility in dealing with the situation and the lack of alignment between the branches.

1. If they had made an exception, they would have two very happy people instead of 2 digitally-active consumers who will definitely talk about the negative experience online. I expected more flexibility a) in the service industry and 2) in such an economic climate.

2. It’s obvious the two branches operate under different rules and policies and the poor alignment left an unpleasant aftertaste in customers who cross-visit. Come on, it’s a global and integrated world now.

Key Takeaways for me (It is a good reminder to me too… as I work in an agency, serving clients)

1. Knowing when to exhibit flexibility

2. Aligning same practices and ensuring same quality is delivered across all different units serving the same client

This will keep customers happy and increase faith + trust in the brand. I think after my friend has used up the remaining in her package, I doubt she will be renewing it, Holland V or Wheelock.

Braided Necklace

Braided Necklace

I love the diversity of perspectives, generation of fresh ideas.

Finally had a chance to come together and create new hand made jewellery ideas with Rachel. I had a necklace which I’ve bought from Australia and it drove me nuts as the strings kept getting entangled. Showed it to Rachel and was amazed @ how she came up with an idea to braid it, twist the ropes and connect it with another silver ring! This braided necklace can even be worn 2 ways!

Lesson learnt: when stuck @ a problem, it may be a good thing to show it to a fresh pair of eyes

Football print

Adidas Orginals Football Tee

I thought this was very smart. It was as if someone took a football and stitched it onto the top. Love Adidas Originals for these brilliant ideas – edgy, street and still maintaining the “sports” heritage. And definitely original. One of my fav brands.

Lurve just peering into the shop on my way to the office…

Less is more.

story-of-stuff

Over this Christmas period, it was an unusual time for me. Unusually thrifty.

Christmas used to be a time for me to spend, give and loosen up. This year, it took a turn. It is probably a combination of factors – Uncle K.C. talking about contentment, doctor’s advice of not having so many things in the room (I have allergic rhinitis, which is triggered by dust mites), the economic outlook and also, a higher awareness of where and how things come from. One of the films that really impacted me was “The Story of Stuff” by Free Range Studios. My eyes were really opened to understand how the consumption eco-system worked. I really respect Free Range Studios, a creative agency that is dedicated to eco-causes. And they do really good work.

I was very conscious of NOT wanting to add unnecessarily to myself or to others. Sent my close friends a mail (those that generally get me presents), that if they want to, they can either empower lives through microfinancing via kiva or giving educational books to kids @ East Timor.  Guess, no idea is “new under the sun”, after I sent that mail,  Free Range Studios created another flash movie – “Changing the Present”.Was happy to see that :)

Strangely, I was OK not having more. Was pleasantly surprised and felt free. Whilst shopping for presents, I was hardly tempted to get anything for myself.

Just happy to have what I have. My new motto for the year is “Less is more”. I’ll still buy stuff… but less, better quality and more fair trade items :)
