Arrivals // Departures

25 03 2009

Caught the movie “Departures” yesterday.

Found it a very poetic movie – the script is beautiful and love the visual shots. My fav shot was when Daigo stood in the middle of the bridge : a good reflection of his state of mind – not knowing which direction to head.

I love the play on the his vague remembrance of his dad’s face and how it became clear. Very beautifully done.

Love the irony of him not having ‘arrived’ in his musical dreams… and having to handle departures. With so much dignity. And how preparing for departures is actually preparing for arrival to another realm. Nice. Kudos to the script writer.

Arrivals, Dreams, Departures, Gates…

Possibilities

Anything is possible. Even branding on a banana :) . Smart design.

Food Styling Tips:

Small finishing touches go a long way: Chillies and dried herbs add an instant perk up. Use Christmas colours – they bring cheer instantly :)

The Bund – Shanghai to Singapore

6 03 2009

Love the decor @ “One on the Bund” - Clifford Pier turned modern swanky chinese restaurant in Singapore.

My memory of Clifford Pier was a run down, dodgy pier – a thing of the past. As I walked into the work of art by Hong Kong restaurateur Calvin Yeung, I was bowed over.

I loved the selection of the red lamps, reminding me of traditional red lanterns, but with a modern twist. I was surprised by the inclusion of video art – carps swimming in a ’simulated pond’ via television sets. Clever. The wood carved menu gave it a rustic feel. The dangling trinkets (Chinese words for ‘The Bund’) from the chopsticks made me want to pluck them out and turn them into earrings!

A lot of thought was definitely put into the creation of this restaurant (Calvin Yeung is also a self-taught interior designer). Good job in bringing the feel of Shanghai’s “The Bund” to Singapore. I love these East-West combis when done well. Worth a visit for a drink by the river – will be a more pleasant experience when the construction in the Marina area is completed.

Each must walk His own

6 03 2009

From various conversations with friends, one thing kept sticking out: that each must walk their own journey.

As Natasha Bedingfield sings,
“Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else”

or Foo Fighter “Everyone’s got their chains to break”,

it is almost all of our lives are individual computer games. Unique obstacles, struggles, background, make-up and we have our own battles to fight.

The grass always seems greener, yet… maybe it isn’t. Just depends who is moving the lawn :)
