Marriage

31 05 2009

It was Melvin’s and Ruth’s wedding today. Very happy to see them married. A match made in heaven. Perfect for each other :)

Was happy to tweet away both on my twitter account and also on Melvin’s via the home computers and Melvin’s iPhone. Many followers. The interaction during the wedding made it more fun [ hashtag= #twedding]

Really great to catch up with old friends whom I’ve grown up with, friends I’m still in touch with and my colleagues too. Realised I really like my work team – Cal, Ams and SY… was just fun to hang out and chit chat…though it was a non work day. Was good to see David too. Funny how after the wedding, we were all online, tweeting away, planning WEddings, checking out Cal’s photos and Ams asking me to tweet at her wedding! Ha. I love Studio D.

In between, had some time to catch up with Tim Bala, who flew all the way from Perth. He brought up a good point… of how he believes that after two people marry, their lives can become more. Bigger, wider, stronger. Blessing many…not just keeping to themselves. Yeah, we’ve both seen couples who shrink away after getting married. I do hope when I get married, it will be about more than the two of us. Just like Joe Chean’s family, I want to invite guests over for dinner. Just like Kheong and Annie, I want to give . Just like the Lims, I want to open my house for those who need family.

Oh yes… also the point of “settling down”. That just brings negative connotations. It just makes marriage seem boring and mundane. Why can’t it be an adventure? Why can’t the coming together of two fuel dreams to be chased, purposes to be fulfilled, hope to be caught? Why can’t it be out and not in ? Why can’t it be more rather than less?

Melvin and Ruth, my wedding wishes – live for more :)

Warmth.

30 05 2009

Talk about helping the homeless. Providing warmth in a practical way.

Snurk (Dutch bedding designers) recently partnered with foundation for homeless youth SZN to create a line of Le Clochard sheets and pillows that look like cardboard. They say that a portion of the proceeds go directly to SZN, who will use the money to build housing (as reported by Lost @ E Minor). Nice Touch.

Are Diamonds a Girl’s Best Friend?

29 05 2009

Had an interesting conversation with Mel and Cal today… about on a scale of 1-10, how practical are you? Cal mentioned he’s a 3… leaning towards the practical. For me, I think it varies for diferent things. Somethings I’m extremely practical. Other,I’m a hopeless idealist. But having said that… I think the last few years have thrusted me towards being more practical… more temperate… more restrained… which can be a good thing. I think I’m beginning to dream a little bit more, hope more and look forward a little more… after feeling I’ve lost my dreams and hope for a good 2 years.

I wonder what people perceive me – am I deadpan realist or a dreamy romantic? I wonder… Well… Mel thinks I’m practical… due to the fact I would rather have a DSLR rather than a diamond ring. Cal thinks I’m rare. Am I?

I think diamonds are nice, pretty, shiny. But that’s about it. Not much value otherwise. At least to me. I would rather have a DSLR or channel the money to a nicer honeymoon destination or cooler funkier home decor. Maybe it’s because I’ve lived on borrowed pro cameras all my life… it’s awesome I have great friends who lend me theirs when I travel or do freelance in the past or for church purposes… but I really really hope I’ll get to own a DSLR and a Video cam one day…Plus diamonds have poor resale value (not that I would ever want to sell an engt/wedding ring) but it sure is not worth much. Mom popped by that day wanting to buy me diamond earrings… I told her I rather her give me the money so I could travel… Why would anyone trade great new experiences with a piece of shiny stone? Cut, clarity, colour… I rather have a camera in Cuba.

Maybe some women tag how much they are loved by how much a guy is willing to spend on them? Maybe some women need to feel they are worth something by the size of their diamond ring? Maybe some women feel special that way? Maybe some women feel they are better than other women if the diamond on their ring is bigger? Maybe it lasts forever?

Hugh Ain’t That Sexy to me

17 05 2009

I was flipping an old issue of 8-days… and they quoted Hugh Jackman as “the Sexiest Man alive”.

Hmm… was totally amused at Grace Tan the other day. I was just commenting that Joel’s hair looked slightly like Wolverine’s, with the ends sticking out a little. And Grace, who usually is even tempered, went into a slight frenzy, insisting that Joel’s hair was not like Hugh’s at all. Nothing can spoil her picture of Mr Hugh Jackman.

Is he really that sexy?

Found him more attractive in Australia than Wolverine. And it wasn’t the bathing-show-off-his-washboard-abs scene. Loved the scene he walked out in the white suit, with that curl in his hair.

I think I don’t like beefcakes. A bit too much testosterone for me. Slightly animalistic even. I tend to gravitate towards the artsy, skinnier, curly hair type… I like…

James Marsden (in 27 dresses, HairSpray; better known as Cyclops – he’s got a good voice)

John Mayer (I gravitate…)

Jason Mraz ( still regret not going for his concert early this year…)

Jay Chou (used to dislike him, but his role in Inital D won me over…)

Ok ok… Rafael Nadal is the only one that is slightly beefcake… love his latest shot on the cover of AUGUST maagazine (Singapore version). Black and White shot. Love his hair. He looked ravishing.

Caught Wolverine last weekend, this quote stood out amidst the noise. Still pondering over this statement…

My 5 Favourite Magazines

8 05 2009

I confess. I’m a magazine junkie.

Think it’s got to do with my short attention span.

My fav reads…

1) Real Simple (US) [for some sanity and the organized, productive side of me]

2) Frankie (Australia) [for the release my indie expressive soul, laissez faire style]

3) Milk (Hong Kong) [street fashion visual feast]

4) Relevant (US) [to continue to be inspired to love, to remember the poor...]

5) 8 Days (Singapore) [local information snacking]

Fried Rice Paradise

Fried Rice and Miso soup

Glad to come home and cook. Cooking is so therapeutic. Carbo too.

Some people find Fried Rice a hastily-put-together-you-don’t-know-any-better type of dish. I don’t care. I like it :) My comfort food. Well, I realise that in life, some things you can explain logically. Some things you just can’t.

Happy the house is quiet – no noisy local channel 8 drama or chinese news in the background. Just the wind, just the sound of my typing, just some traffic. Therapeutic. It’s been a really packed few weeks.

Had a tough day at work, bothered by some heart thoughts and glad to have some fried rice :)
